When To Give Up Writing Music

Have you ever felt like GIVING UP songwriting because it seems everyone else is better? 
 
JOY to KNOW: Manya time, I've sadly joked, "I wish *I* had written that!" 
But you'll find YOU have your own history & tool set 
that will give a special flavor to your own songs. 
NO one else can write just like you. Just keep writing.
 And REMEMBER:
Most songwriters wrote  a few HUNDRED (s) songs 
before the few you've heard & loved of theirs. 
Even Charles Wesley -- whose dozens of songs are in Methodist hymnals -- actually wrote another 6,500  songs that have NEVER been heard, other than by rare music majors!
 
BROKEN & HEALED PRAYER was God's gift to people thru me during a very VERY dark period of my life... including when I thought I should just give up trying to write songs. Don't give Up. At least not until you know it is GOD and not SATAN telling you to stop.

EASY Way To Write New Songs Out

 - DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com  

You can write music WHEREVER you are.  You don't need special equipment including music writing programs before you can write songs. We have about 4,000 years of songs written without these! All you need is paper & a pen or pencil... and a binder to store your Treasures safely from God until you have time to type them and/or get the music recorded.

God gave me the idea to COPYRIGHT a special NOTATION method that uses a SIMPLE chart format so you can quickly sketch out the TIMING as well as melody notes & chords with your lyrics... all at once. See the photo for a sample, and my website on the OTEN tab for videos and manuals with both general info and specific info for writing music notes (notation) for BASS, Guitar, Keyboard, etc. instruments.


Usually I keep my journal handy when praying on knees (alone, sometimes at church altar)-- because SO often, I realize a full set of rhyming lyrics immediately comes to mind for another song. I'd forget easily, & I want to "take care of" God's wondrous gift ideas.

I keep song history notes, & laugh in joy when within minutes I write a lyrics setup using my Notation Method (See OTEN on website) on plain paper for 3 verses + chorus-- and I often wonder if God our friend laughs at our Joyful surprise..... Then it's easy to take lyrics notes to an instrument to write in melody notes and music chords later.

New Ideas When Stalled

 - DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com  

How do you get NEW ideas when your creativity feels Stalled in songwriting?... 
Try learning a different instrument EVEN if you don't plan to record with it. 
 
WHY IT WORKS > 
You learn to LISTEN better to songs, to HEAR the background. Then to write your OWN new ideas for background movement as well as the Melody of your song.
 
My evidence that enabled FAR more creativity in songwriting. >> We whose first instrument was a piano, learned to play whatever music notes in front of us. But at CREATION Northeast music festivals 2000 I started listening to bass players do what I now know are "walkdowns" to add depth (pun intended) & CREATIVE adds to even old hymns.
 
  "More Love More Power" played by various groups was first song I strove to play with 5 or 6 strings (bass & guitar) and not 88. 
 
So now I strive to add walk-downs & walk-ups in many songs -- just for the FUN of it! ...
 
... all because I felt Stuck & Stalled in finding new ways to write music, so that not all my songs would sound alike.  
 
Experiment to see what works for YOU when you feel stalled.  Don't give up!   -- DianaDee  ....

Warming Up With Fun

WARMING UP WITH FUN - DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com  

Sweetwater musician's catalog & Facebook page just posted a poll with this Question:
 
How do you musicians warm up before playing?
 
Some answers were funny. I was in a weird mood, so I rather like my answer:
"Holding a steaming cup of hot chocolate.... with Marshmallows.  Tiny marshmallows".
 
But really -- You might enjoy my WARMUP method for yourself: 
I created my own WARMUP GUIDE with a thin binder.
 
Inside, I've put (legal) photocopies of my favorite hymns & songs, with
difficult chord progressions for the GUITAR and BASS sections, and
 growing complexity of melody for the PIANO section of WARMUP exercise.
 
But these are NOT just boring "exercise"... They are all SONGS that I  *LIKE*   to play..
SO:  warmups are FUN, not work. 
It is, after all, called PLAYING music.

Wildfire and Prayer Words

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com  

As a child, I loved the horse song WILDFIRE. 
Years of "life" changed my dire thoughts about that word. 
Especially after our beautiful family reunion cabin in Pigeon Forge, TN, USA
burned down in 2016  -- because two teenage boys wanted to play Hero reporting
the fire they'd started.... but it grew faster than they had dreamed....
and DESTROYED ACRES and LIVES.....
WILDFIRE isn't a pretty word to me anymore.
 
As a child, I dutifully prayed "Now I lay me down to sleep 
I pray the Lord my soul to keep."  Years of "life" changed my dire thoughts about that word PRAYER.
PRAYER is no longer boring but a DELIGHT to me now!
 
Ohhhhh, how I need Him.  Prayer is more than just a word now... 
 
SONGS, old hymns often hold the words that our minds cannot think to pray. About 100 psalms set to music inspired by God are on my HYMNS tab,

All free MP3 downloads... both with singing & piano only for churches to use during worship services.  MORE hymns whether adding new style to an old one or making a NEW song are always welcome!  
Psalm 96... Oh, SING to the LORD a New Song!

God Is Big Enough Audience

Are you   FEELING  LIKE  A  FAILURE
because the usual definition of  
"success" = high numbers
of people whom you reach with the work you do for God...
the music you do out of LOVE for Him, wanting to serve?


The size of your music audience or Facebook Ministry or
 <fill in the blank> 
does not matter when  
all you truly care about is pleasing 
your ever-present Audience of One... 
Who gifted you in the first place.... 
 
This is a COMFORT amidst a world that tries to measure our worth with Statistics of "Success". 
Colossians 3:17, "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."
