New Ideas When Stalled

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

How do you get NEW ideas when your creativity feels Stalled in songwriting?...

Try learning a different instrument EVEN if you don't plan to record with it.

WHY IT WORKS >

You learn to LISTEN better to songs, to HEAR the background. Then to write your OWN new ideas for background movement as well as the Melody of your song.

My evidence that enabled FAR more creativity in songwriting. >> We whose first instrument was a piano, learned to play whatever music notes in front of us. But at CREATION Northeast music festivals 2000 I started listening to bass players do what I now know are "walkdowns" to add depth (pun intended) & CREATIVE adds to even old hymns.

"More Love More Power" played by various groups was first song I strove to play with 5 or 6 strings (bass & guitar) and not 88.

So now I strive to add walk-downs & walk-ups in many songs -- just for the FUN of it! ...

... all because I felt Stuck & Stalled in finding new ways to write music, so that not all my songs would sound alike.

Experiment to see what works for YOU when you feel stalled. Don't give up! -- DianaDee ....

Much joy to you in growing your music! - DdO:)

Warming Up With Fun

WARMING UP WITH FUN - DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

Sweetwater musician's catalog & Facebook page just posted a poll with this Question:

How do you musicians warm up before playing?

Some answers were funny. I was in a weird mood, so I rather like my answer:

"Holding a steaming cup of hot chocolate.... with Marshmallows. Tiny marshmallows".

But really -- You might enjoy my WARMUP method for yourself:

I created my own WARMUP GUIDE with a thin binder.

Inside, I've put (legal) photocopies of my favorite hymns & songs, with

difficult chord progressions for the GUITAR and BASS sections, and

growing complexity of melody for the PIANO section of WARMUP exercise.

But these are NOT just boring "exercise"... They are all SONGS that I *LIKE* to play..

SO: warmups are FUN, not work.

It is, after all, called PLAYING music.

Much joy to you in growing your music! - DdO:)

Wildfire and Prayer Words

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

As a child, I loved the horse song WILDFIRE.

Years of "life" changed my dire thoughts about that word.

Especially after our beautiful family reunion cabin in Pigeon Forge, TN, USA

burned down in 2016 -- because two teenage boys wanted to play Hero reporting

the fire they'd started.... but it grew faster than they had dreamed....

and DESTROYED ACRES and LIVES.....

WILDFIRE isn't a pretty word to me anymore.

As a child, I dutifully prayed "Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray the Lord my soul to keep." Years of "life" changed my dire thoughts about that word PRAYER.

PRAYER is no longer boring but a DELIGHT to me now!

Ohhhhh, how I need Him. Prayer is more than just a word now...

SONGS, old hymns often hold the words that our minds cannot think to pray. About 100 psalms set to music inspired by God are on my HYMNS tab,

https://dianadeeosbornesongs.com/PSALMS-and-Prophets.php

All free MP3 downloads... both with singing & piano only for churches to use during worship services. MORE hymns whether adding new style to an old one or making a NEW song are always welcome!

Psalm 96... Oh, SING to the LORD a New Song!

Much joy to you in growing your music! - DdO:)

God Is Big Enough Audience

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

Are you FEELING LIKE A FAILURE

because the usual definition of

"success" = high numbers

of people whom you reach with the work you do for God...

the music you do out of LOVE for Him, wanting to serve?

The size of your music audience or Facebook Ministry or

does not matter when

all you truly care about is pleasing

your ever-present Audience of One...

Who gifted you in the first place....

This is a COMFORT amidst a world that tries to measure our worth with Statistics of "Success".

Colossians 3:17, "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

Much joy to you in growing your music

focused on God, not your "numbers"! - DdO:)

Why I Write This Songwriter Blog

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

Why do I post on this page for my website full of songs? **NOT** just for "marketing" over 1,200 FREE downloads of God's songs thru me... for almost 700 recorded songs.

No: I created this Blog because

Encouragement is never overly abundant in life...

I enjoy sharing a few words to help others like you remember:

You are NOT alone in trying to decide

whether the Joy of writing & playing outweighs the

disappointment when we don't see "Fruit"...

James 1:5. God loves to give you wisdom, when you ask.

Encouragement for you: The Joy IS a delightful Fruit!

Much joy to you in growing your music! - DdO:)

Easy Improved Vocal Tracks ... by DianaDee Osborne

MARCH 16, 2015

I'm going back in time... finding songs I recorded
years ago, and gradually re-recording vocals for songs where my voice was rather weak,
or I'd made some mistakes that I never remembered to
"GO AND FIX" since I record a 5-year average of
60 songs per year....

I'm finding that since I have not practiced and practiced recently, as I did then,
that there are often "NO CLUES IN THE MUSIC" for when to come in for
verses or the chorus or bridge. Thus... I GET LOST when recording to just the music.

EASY SOLUTION:
1. Listen a few times to your old vocal track, and mark the music where you'd sung the wrong words (or those you're now changing), or got off the beat.

2. Create a new vocal track. Sing WITH the original vocal, with your now stronger voice.
However: The wrong timing or different words might throw you off.
That's OK!! Just do the right timing and words as best you can.

3. Create a 3rd vocal track. Sing WITH the NEW vocal, having muted the original vocal track.
Because your 2nd vocal was so much better (and because you've had an excellent practice!)
This 3rd track will be SO much better! Right in time with the original music.
And of course you can always do a 4th, 5th track
with or without the earlier vocal track that may no longer be needed.

4. Now just delete all of your old vocal tracks, Of course: for FUN,
you might want to keep the original just so you can
keep enjoying the reminder of how much
you've improved over the years!
Fun memories of how NERVOUS you were in your
early years of recording vocal tracks!

Much joy to you in growing your music! - DdO:)

Avoiding Blah Tunes .... by DianaDee Osborne

An old game show "Name that Tune" tested people's ability to remember old songs. Another game show could be "Name that BAND." Musicians tend to have favorite chords and progressions and sound mix textures.

If you want to bring amazing FRESHNESS into your songs,
Don't just start a song with a melody:
STOP.... LISTEN... Not just a cliche:

Go outdoors and listen to sounds:
The birds, the wind in the trees, traffic noise, the overhead jets...
the cadence of people talking and laughing.
Go indoors and listen: Washing machine swirling, the fan's spin,
the undulation waves of the refrigerator motor....

Drum out beats with your hand on any surface-- from your lap (low beat) to
crunchy leaves.
Sometimes REST awhile in the percussion of the
world around you.... and wait for the melody
      to come into your head.

Combinatoric Waves Peace

SONG HISTORY:

Ocean waves were crashing against a pointed rock barrier, coming from two directions. One day I noticed something “different” in the sound as I stood by the water at dawn. I closed my eyes... listened... realized that

to my left, the water was like the usual 4/4 time with a heavy hit on the rocks as “Count 1” and a lighter hit on “count 3” and then repeating the pattern at the end of each 4 counts.

BUT -- on my RIGHT side, the water took longer between “count 3” and the heavy repeat on Count 1.

The Music of the Water was in 5/4 time as it hit the rock barrier at a different angle.

I charted out what I heard in the sand, and later created a spreadsheet to study my observation. After talking with a couple of mathematicians, I learned that the word for this combination of two different series is “Combinatoric”.
