Odd Time Signatures Give ENERGY

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

I was an onwatcher in a church as visiting musician, when much of the congregation began speaking in tongues... (but NO conflict with God's 1st Corinthians 14. It did NOT seem planned, was not yelling but sounded as praying-- AND MUSICAL, in 7/4 timing).

Almost no one writes in 7/4 ... which is rather sad: This DIFFERENT timing gives ENERGY to songs. The "parable" at the church service led to me being even more when a leader began interpreting-- and the words seemed to match the praying.

God is "Different" and often USES "Different".

As musicians-- let's not stick with HABITS of 3/4 and 4/4 when we feel God is guiding us to something that sounds -- we admit it -- WEIRD !!

There's just no way to describe the REAL-ness of this kind of praying when we've seen so many instances that felt contrived as if trying to sound spiritual.

And it is SO much fun to enjoy the REAL-ness of ODD TIME SIGNATURES as we explore NEW SOUNDS for the song ideas God so often gives.

PS: Photo Description NOT QUITE accurate: 7/4 has 3 variations of hardness of beats (AKA accents): (1) HARD Soft S S S S S.... (2) H s s H s s s .... + the one I write in, (3) H s s s H s s (which weirdly sounds like an "action waltz").

One sample (recorded but needs rework) of 7/4 = "PRAYER CONFUSION"

where the Odd timing adds a TENSION that shows the feeling of OFF KILTER when we don't know how to pray >> https://dianadeeosbornesongs.com/Songs-2008-2012.php --- MUSIC SHEETS....

Song Memory Trick for Chord Progressions

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

One of the scary-est things of playing in a band is when you're not suppose to look at your music sheet much..... BUT you have trouble remembering which order the chords come in. Especially when the same chords are

often MIXED AROUND for the chorus! Argggh! ....

SO:

How can you memorize chord progressions for playing worship songs so you don't depend on a music sheet in front of you?

TRY THIS: COMMON NOTE METHOD

Often there is ONE note that passes to the next chord. That's means... It's the SAME note in both those chords.

That is why major 7 and 6 chords are often lovely tools-- They add an "odd" note which becomes the "usual" note of the new chord..

So it helps to look for that pattern. LOOK AT PHOTO & see COMMON notes:

C G D is common progression.

C has a G on top that we then go to that chord;

G has a D on top that we then go to that chord with its A on top..

The 4th chord is often F (with an A) or A (ditto) or tone change to Bm7 (A)...

Works for some of us, including in songwriting ideas.

(Remember concept that Eb = D# so it's fun to play chords Eb to D#, or A major to F#m with common A note.)

Much joy to you in growing your music! - DdO:)

Drum Machine Song Idea Maker

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

Sometimes when I'm "in a mood", I'll set & play one of the various beat options on my drum machine until a new song "melody" starts making itself known to my mind...

& sometimes I ask my drummer/ producer to "record anything" & then I take the tracks home to do that....

Thanking God that I've learned to enjoy being weird....

one of the most fun things about getting older! And... you can go on sites like YouTube to get ideas on how to create interesting drum patterns for the songs you write. That SHORTENS TIME (and cost$) at the professional studio when you give the drummer an idea of the "sound in your head".

Preludes Added To Old Hymns

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

Older people often love older hymns, while teens & younger adults often prefer new, even "rocking" worship songs. EASY SOLUTION: Include a COMBO in the Worship Music set list.

The invented term for this style = "BLENDED WORSHIP".

So don't feel you have to write EVERY song completely "from scratch". Like adding creative touches to an old recipe, it is fun to take old hymns

and then add a new MOVEMENT (full song section / movement)

or chorus.

SAMPLE:

"INVITATION ENDLESS HOPE" = 1 of my favorite titles, recorded in 2011 as a

PRELUDE Song to "Just as I Am" in a

church service-- or our private Prayer

singing to our LORD God.

FULL LYRICS & audio Links listed below.

This OLD hymn with an added NEW hymn together reminds us of God's Word: We do NOT have to do any tasks first:

God dearly loves us AMID troubles, including #CoronaVirus and $$ problems etc...

God offers PEACE and Hope-- For us to SHARE with Others:

1st Peter 3:15. Including by SONGS.

SAMPLE: Free music sheets and audio files INCL OLD HYMNS at

https://dianadeeosbornesongs.com/Songs-2008-2012.php .....

including these lyrics:

"JESUS OFFERS WAYS TO COPE." Hear scriptures song of comfort here >>

“He who trusts in his own heart is a fool…..” -- Proverbs 28: 26a.

God's Invitation to ALL come "Just as you are, whatever your sin"

BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

INVITATION ENDLESS HOPE
©2021, 2011 by DianaDee Osborne

VERSE 1

Hopeless End OR Endless Hope???

Jesus offers ways to COPE.

Holy Spirit helps us pray,

when Pain clouds what words to say......

Father God stretched OUT His arms, with

love and WELCOME:

WILL YOU COME, TODAY?

TODAY? TODAY? Before it's too LATE?

VERSE 2

Father, Spirit, Son are ONE.

Mighty God calls YOU to come.

John 3: 16, YOU'RE the World

Jesus loved on that Cross -- and loves still.

Jesus Christ stretched OUT His arms,

love and WELCOME:

WILL YOU COME, TODAY?

TODAY? TODAY? Before it's too LATE?

(Plus JUST AS I AM original version on website: )

Just as YOU are, whatever your sin,

Jesus calls you, BEGS you, Come to Him.

Set aside deadly pride. Choose LIFE with God.

Pray Romans 10: 9 and then

you'll be saved for heaven.

JUST AS I AM, without one plea but that Thy blood was shed for me,

and that Thou bidst me COME to Thee: O, Lamb of God, I come. I come.

JUST AS I AM and WAITING NOT to

rid my soul of one dark blot, to

Thee Whose blood can cleanse each spot, O, Lamb of God, I come. I come.

JUST AS I AM, though tossed about with

many a conflict, many a doubt.

Fightings and fears within, without: O, Lamb of God, I come. I come.

JUST AS I AM, Thou wilt receive, will

WELCOME, PARDON, CLEANSE, RELIEVE.

Because You promise, I believe. O, Lamb of God, I come. I Come.

Much joy to you in growing your music! - DdO:)

Out Of Tune PAIN Parable

- DianaDeeOsborneSongs.com

When my first child began 6th grade band, we went to his first concert-- and our first school concert too. The teacher came out, raised his arm, and the 2 dozen children began playing with energy-- especially the violinists. The teacher lowered his arm... and the audience of parents CLAPPED.

Only when the teacher turned & gave us a weird look did we realize: The students were just checking to be sure everyone was in tune with each other! Otherwise, we would ALL have suffered "ear pain" in the concert!

In my 2nd month of going to recording studios, I played the guitar track for a song that had no other instruments besides my producer playing drums. ONLY WHEN we went back the following week to add my live bass track did we realize -- My guitar had been tuned 1/2 step too low. Every note was OK with EACH OTHER.... but not with any other instruments to come.

Both are good PARABLES > Each musician is responsible for keeping in tune his or her own flute, oboe, horn, guitar, bass, violin, cello.... etc... JUST ONE instrument whose notes are 1/2 step off everyone else's can RUIN the loveliness of the music.

BUT .... REMINDER >>

ONLY a Church is able to ensure its piano has been correctly tuned. No one else has any control other than to reject future invitations to use their talents at that church. And LEAVE.

.... So also: Only church leadership can ensure its leaders are IN TUNE WITH GOD'S SCRIPTURES.

AND THEN the leaders must do what God entrusted to them-- to ensure the congregation is IN TUNE WITH GOD'S SCRIPTURES...

If anyone FAILS to do so... even one.... Pain follows.

After awhile, if leaders refuse to prayerfully do so, members who find that their cries to "Just get in tune!" are ignored will.... sadly.... leave to take their talents to another congregation.

Much joy to you in growing your music! - DdO:)
