Don't Give Up Your Dream

When I first began writing Songs of God in June 2006 with "AMAZING GRACE BLUES",

my main prayer was

"Who in the world is going to hear songs from some lady in <TinyTown>, God?!"...

But I had song ideas "in my head" ---

SO I began writing songs anyway.

Facebook opened to the public JUST 3 months later,

and of course the World Wide Web internet has become Easy.

Almost 700 recorded songs on website later, I *CAN* encourage you!

.... DON'T GIVE UP any Dream

you think might "just possibly" be from God!

When God wants our service, He provides our way.

Ephesians 3:20-21, you don't want to work in your OWN power anyway!

For HIS Glory.....

Odd Time Signatures Give ENERGY

I was an onwatcher in a church as visiting musician, when much of the congregation began speaking in tongues... (but NO conflict with God's 1st Corinthians 14. It did NOT seem planned, was not yelling but sounded as praying-- AND MUSICAL, in 7/4 timing).

Almost no one writes in 7/4 ... which is rather sad: This DIFFERENT timing gives ENERGY to songs. The "parable" at the church service led to me being even more when a leader began interpreting-- and the words seemed to match the praying.

God is "Different" and often USES "Different".

As musicians-- let's not stick with HABITS of 3/4 and 4/4 when we feel God is guiding us to something that sounds -- we admit it -- WEIRD !!

There's just no way to describe the REAL-ness of this kind of praying when we've seen so many instances that felt contrived as if trying to sound spiritual.

And it is SO much fun to enjoy the REAL-ness of ODD TIME SIGNATURES as we explore NEW SOUNDS for the song ideas God so often gives.

PS: Photo Description NOT QUITE accurate: 7/4 has 3 variations of hardness of beats (AKA accents): (1) HARD Soft S S S S S.... (2) H s s H s s s .... + the one I write in, (3) H s s s H s s (which weirdly sounds like an "action waltz").

Song Memory Trick for Chord Progressions

One of the scary-est things of playing in a band is when you're not suppose to look at your music sheet much..... BUT you have trouble remembering which order the chords come in. Especially when the same chords are

often MIXED AROUND for the chorus! Argggh! ....

SO:

How can you memorize chord progressions for playing worship songs so you don't depend on a music sheet in front of you?

TRY THIS: COMMON NOTE METHOD

Often there is ONE note that passes to the next chord. That's means... It's the SAME note in both those chords.

That is why major 7 and 6 chords are often lovely tools-- They add an "odd" note which becomes the "usual" note of the new chord..

So it helps to look for that pattern. LOOK AT PHOTO & see COMMON notes:

C G D is common progression.

C has a G on top that we then go to that chord;

G has a D on top that we then go to that chord with its A on top..

The 4th chord is often F (with an A) or A (ditto) or tone change to Bm7 (A)...

Works for some of us, including in songwriting ideas.

(Remember concept that Eb = D# so it's fun to play chords Eb to D#, or A major to F#m with common A note.)

Drum Machine Song Idea Maker

Sometimes when I'm "in a mood", I'll set & play one of the various beat options on my drum machine until a new song "melody" starts making itself known to my mind...

& sometimes I ask my drummer/ producer to "record anything" & then I take the tracks home to do that....

Thanking God that I've learned to enjoy being weird....

one of the most fun things about getting older! And... you can go on sites like YouTube to get ideas on how to create interesting drum patterns for the songs you write. That SHORTENS TIME (and cost$) at the professional studio when you give the drummer an idea of the "sound in your head".
